WHAT IS IT?
A 6-week training program
designed for parents of children ages 5-10 (K-5th grade). The
curriculum offers concrete tools for working with highly emotional and impulsive
younger children. Also, identification and preventative tools to intervene with
at-risk behaviors
TOPICS: Parenting the strong
willed vs. the compliant child, clarifying rules, encouraging positive choices,
coping with children’s emotional responses, active supervision, structure,
working with child’s school, improving school performance, effective time outs,
action plans and consistency.
HOW
DOES IT WORK?
Parents attend and learn, in a
classroom model, to manage behavioral problems at home. The activity based
curriculum guide, “Loving Solutions,” is available only to program
participants. Classes meet from 9:00am – 12:00pm every Saturday for 6
consecutive weeks or 6:00pm- 9:00pm one night a week for 6 consecutive weeks.
Students will work through
curriculum on conflict resolution and will receive the “Junior Master
Gardener Handbook,” and work through activities in this book.
WHO TEACHES THE
PROGRAM?
Facilitators come from school
systems, police and probation departments, DHR, Mental Health agencies, churches
and other community based organizations. The facilitators have completed
extensive training to be qualified to teach Parent Project classes.
HOW ARE REFERRALS
MADE?
Referrals come from the school
systems, police departments, juvenile court, DHR, Northwest Alabama Mental
Health Center, and other area agencies. Parents may also self refer.
CLASS SCHEDULE
Participants will be notified
two weeks before by mail of the exact date and location.
CHILDCARE
Free childcare is provided for
each class session. Parents are required to contact the Parent Project
office with ages of children to schedule this service.
COST/FEES
There is a one-time fee of
$60.00 for the book/material for parents and teens. Individuals that complete
the program may attend future sessions at no additional fee. |
