WHAT IS IT?
A
10-week parent-training program designed for parents of strong willed or
out-of-control adolescent children. The curriculum teaches concrete
identification, prevention and intervention strategies for the most destructive
of adolescent behaviors including poor school attendance and performance,
alcohol and other drug use, gangs, runaways and violent teens. The course also
provides information on better understanding our children, creating structure,
addressing unwanted behaviors, identifying support for parents, and active listening.
HOW
DOES IT WORK?
Parents attend and learn, in a
classroom model, to manage teen behavioral problems at home. The activity based
curriculum guide, A Parent's Guide to Destructive Adolescent Behavior,
is available only to program participants. Classes meet from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
on Saturday for 10 weeks or 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. one night a week for 10 weeks.
WHO
TEACHES THE PROGRAM?
Facilitators come from school
systems, police and probation departments, DHR, Mental Health agencies, churches
and other community based organizations. The facilitators have completed
extensive training to be qualified to teach Parent Project classes.
HOW ARE REFERRALS
MADE?
Referrals come from the school
systems, police departments, juvenile court, DHR, Northwest Alabama Mental
Health Center, and other area agencies. Parents may also self refer.
TEEN CLASS
While parents are meeting in
one classroom, the teens are meeting in another. The teens study from the
curriculum guide, Play by the Rules: Alabama Laws for Youth.
Teens will participate in 2 hours of community service each class and will be
required to do a written or an oral report on their participation in this class
as a graduation requirement for the course.
CLASS SCHEDULE
Participants will be notified
two weeks before by mail of the exact date and location.
CHILDCARE
Free childcare is provided for
each class session. Parents are required to contact the Parent Project
office with ages of children to schedule this service.
COST/FEES
There is a one-time fee of
$90.00 for the book/material for parents and teens. |
